Turn an invoice into structured JSON data

Paste or drop an invoice and get its numbers, dates, line items and tax as JSON. Amounts stay as printed, and fields the invoice leaves out stay empty.

or drop a PDF, Word or text file here (up to 5 pages, 2 MB)

This preview shows the first 25 rows and does not keep your file.

An invoice holds the same facts in a layout that changes from supplier to supplier: the invoice number, the dates, a list of items, and the tax and total at the bottom. Copying those values into a system by hand is slow, and a single misread digit can throw off a payment. This page reads the invoice and returns its fields as JSON, with invoice numbers, dates, amounts and tax kept exactly as printed.

What you get

Figures kept as printed

Invoice numbers, dates, amounts and VAT are copied as they appear on the page, including the currency symbol and date format, so you can match them against the original.

Empty fields stay empty

If an invoice does not show a payment due date or a VAT number, the field is left blank rather than filled with a guess.

Rows and columns preview

The result appears as a table of rows and columns above the JSON, so you can check the line items before you use the data.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Paste the invoice text, or drop a PDF, Word or text file into the box. Files up to 5 pages or 2 MB are read in the preview.

  2. Step 2

Read the preview. It shows the first part of the extracted fields and line items as a table, with the JSON beneath it.

  3. Step 3

A free account gives you the full JSON download, longer and scanned files, batches of files, and the option to change the structure by asking.

Who uses it

  • Bookkeepers receiving supplier invoices

Pull the invoice number, date, supplier and total into a consistent structure before entering them in your accounts system.

  • Small businesses keeping an invoice archive

Turn a folder of invoices into records you can search by supplier, date or amount instead of opening each PDF.

  • Anyone checking a bill line by line

See each item's quantity, unit price and amount in one table, and compare the subtotal and VAT against the printed totals.

Questions

What fields does the JSON include from an invoice?

It picks out the fields the invoice shows, up to eight per record: typically the supplier and customer, invoice number, invoice date, payment terms, line items with quantity, unit price and amount, VAT and the total due. Any field the invoice does not give is left empty.

Will the invoice number and amounts stay exactly as printed?

Yes. The instructions tell the tool to keep invoice numbers, dates, amounts and tax exactly as they appear, so HLP-2024-0317 stays as written and £345.54 is not reformatted or rounded. Check the output against the original before you rely on it, because extraction can still make mistakes.

Can it read a scanned invoice?

Scanned invoices need a free account, which runs OCR to read the image. The preview only reads text-based files, so a scan will not show a result without signing in.

Is my invoice stored after I convert it?

The preview reads the document to produce its result and does not keep the file. Accounts handle whole documents, so check the site's privacy terms if the invoice contains sensitive customer details.
