Tailor your resume to a job description

A resume that fits the job gets read. One that doesn't, gets skipped. You do not need to write a new resume for every application. You need to change what comes first and which words you use.

Before you start

You need a resume in WordGPT. If you don't have one yet, see How to build your resume with WordGPT. Open it from Resume in the left sidebar. You can create a free account if you haven't yet.

Keep your main resume as it is. Make a copy for each kind of job, so you can always go back.

Tailor it with the assistant

1. Open the Assistant tab.
2. Choose the suggestion Tailor to a job. It fills the box with a request that says "reorder and reword, never invent anything".
3. Paste the full job description under that sentence and send it.

The assistant edits the resume and shows what it changed. Typically it moves the most relevant experience up, uses the words from the posting where they are true for you, and shortens what doesn't matter for this role.

Check what it did

The assistant is told not to invent anything. Still, read the result against your own history:

• Is every job, date and number still correct?
• Does a skill appear that you don't have? Delete it in the Edit tab.
• Does the profile still sound like you?

If a change is wrong, say so in plain words: "put my teaching experience back first". You can also fix anything by hand in the Edit tab.

More requests that help

The same panel has other one-click suggestions: Fit on one page, Stronger bullets, Write a stronger summary, Translate to English and Fix grammar. After tailoring, "fit on one page" is often a good last step.

Tips

• Paste the whole posting, not only the requirements. The tone and the duties matter too.
• Tailoring cannot fix a missing qualification. It makes what you have easier to see.
• Add one concrete number to your top bullet for the role. Ask the assistant, then supply the number yourself.
• Download a PDF per application and name it after the company. See Publish your resume and download it as a PDF.
