A long PDF chapter is hard to revise because the main ideas are spread over many pages and the key terms are buried in paragraphs. This tool reads the document and writes a short study guide: four to six main ideas, the key terms the PDF defines, and five questions to test yourself. The preview reads the first 5 pages or about 6,000 characters, and names, figures, dates and section order stay exactly as they appear in the original.

What you get

Main ideas in order

The guide lists the four to six main ideas in the same order as the sections of your PDF, so you can revise chapter by chapter.

Key terms from the document

Only terms the PDF itself explains are included, each with a one-line definition taken from the text rather than from general knowledge.

Five self-test questions

Each guide ends with five questions based on the material, so you can check what you remember before you look at the answers.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Paste the text of your PDF into the box, or drop the PDF file onto it. Scanned pages need a free account because they are read with OCR.

  2. Step 2

Read the preview: it shows the start of the study guide, with the main ideas, the first key terms and the self-test questions.

  3. Step 3

Create a free account to get the whole guide, plus a longer version, flashcards and a quiz from the same material, files and photos, and an editable document you can print.

Who uses it

  • Students revising for an exam

Turn a long textbook chapter or lecture handout into a guide you can read the night before, with the key terms and questions already picked out.

  • Anyone reading a report for work

Get the main points and terms from a long report, then use the self-test questions to check you understood the sections before a meeting.

  • Teachers preparing review material

Start a review sheet from a course PDF, then edit the guide in your account and print it for the class.

Questions

How much of my PDF does the preview read?

The preview reads up to 5 pages of a PDF, or about 6,000 characters of pasted text, and shows the start of the study guide. The file is not kept after the preview. A free account produces the guide for the whole document.

Will the study guide keep the names, figures and dates from my PDF?

Yes. Names, figures, dates and the order of the sections are kept exactly as written. Key terms are only included when the PDF explains them. Results can still contain mistakes, so check the guide against the original when accuracy matters, such as before an exam or a submission.

My PDF is a scan. Can I still make a study guide?

A scanned PDF is only a picture of the text, so it needs OCR to be read. OCR is included with a free account. If you paste text copied from a scan, the line breaks may split sentences, and the guide will still work from that text.

What language is the study guide written in?

The guide is written in the same language as your PDF. A French chapter gives a French guide, and an English handout gives an English one.
