How it works

To add VAT, multiply the price by 1 plus the rate: 100 at 20% becomes 100 x 1.20 = 120, of which 20 is VAT.

To take VAT out of a price that already includes it, divide by 1 plus the rate: 120 / 1.20 = 100. Do not subtract 20% of 120; that gives 96, which is wrong.

Rates shown on the example pages are the standard rates at the time of writing. Reduced rates apply to some goods, and rates change, so confirm the current rate with your tax authority.

Common mistakes

  • Subtracting the VAT rate from a gross price instead of dividing by 1 plus the rate.
  • Using the standard rate for goods that have a reduced or zero rate.
  • Rounding each line instead of the invoice total, which can leave a cent of difference with your accounting software.

Questions

How do I add 25% VAT to SEK 100?

Multiply by 1.25: SEK 125.00, of which SEK 25.00 is VAT.

How do I take 25% VAT out of SEK 100?

Divide by 1.25: the price without VAT is SEK 80.00 and the VAT inside is SEK 20.00.

Is this the current VAT rate?

The rate is the standard one at the time of writing. Rates and reduced rates change, so check the official rate before you invoice.

Why is VAT inside a price not the same as the rate times the price?

Because the VAT is a part of the larger, VAT-inclusive price. 25% of SEK 100 would be SEK 25.00, but the VAT inside it is only SEK 20.00.
